1957 ARTICLE ABOUT WHITE OTTER CASTLE

White Otter Castle is one of our areas man made wonders. It was built by one man. It took him 23 years to build because he would not take any offers of help. His name was Jimmy McQuat and he stood at five feet seven and 145 pounds. Legend has it that he was told as a young man "that he would never amount to anything and die in a shack." He built the castle from red and white pine logs. The main building is three stories with a 41' tower.

Looking out southwest from the tower, you can almost capture the spirit of the Hermit of White Otter Lake. He accepted help from my Grandfather Tony Berglund with the windows of the castle. They were hauled 60 miles from Ignace over 17 portages between lakes. He was 58 when he drowned in 1920. Tony Berglund found the body on July 4, 1921 and buried him infront of his beloved castle. Nora Lake is one portage away from White Otter. We have boats and motors there for the use of our guests only. Come and visit this man made wonder for yourself!
